Where to find the best sourdough pizzas in London

Celebrate National Sourdough Bread Day in style by tasting some of the best sourdough pizzas in London.

While most people look forward to pulling pranks on 1st April, bakers up and down the country celebrate this date for a whole different reason. Believe it or not, the first day of April is also known as National Sourdough Bread Day. And as we’re such massive foodies at Propagrub, we’d prefer to cheers to the latter (but we’re also always up for a prank war!).

Sourdough is an extremely natural bread, made without processing aids or any of that other artificial stuff. The bread is made with something called a ‘starter’, which is a combination of flour and water that eventually grows its own natural yeast. This is what creates the sour ‘tang’ we all know and love.

Whether it’s used for a snazzy sandwich or turned into salad croutons, this crunchy, tangy staple is a fantastic addition to so many dishes. And it’s especially popular for its ability to become the perfect pizza base.

If you’re in the mood for a crispier but fluffier and generally tastier (yep, we said it!) pizza, you’ve come to the right place.

Here is Propagrub’s round up of the best sourdough pizzas in London – in no particular order, of course.

Theo’s Pizzeria

South London’s Theo’s Pizzeria is the place to go if you want high quality sourdough pizza for under a tenner. Surrounded by a fresh, white interior, enjoy a variety of topping combinations served by cheery staff in this South London independent.

With branches in Camberwell and Elephant & Castle, Theo’s is popular amongst South Londoners for its wood-fire brick oven cooked pizzas, which come piled high with exciting toppings. A menu highlight is The Scotch Bonnet Nduja, topped with a spiced sausage that’s actually made next door to the Camberwell branch at the Camberwell Arms Pub. The restaurant also serves incredible desserts and cocktails, making for an all-round positive dining experience.

Eco

Pronounced Eh-co, this pizzeria is big on serving an authentic sourdough experience. Based in Clapham Common with a new site recently launched in Kingston, Eco pizzeria creates their edible masterpieces using an ancient Egyptian sourdough recipe introduced by Beni Suef-born owner Sami Wasif. Sami also helped to build chains like Franco Manca, so you can trust he knows what he’s talking about.

This family-friendly restaurant offers something for everyone throughout its regular, plant-based, kids and even theatre menu, with wood-fire oven cooked sourdough pizza bases at the heart of all the action. Eco serves a mixture of familiar classics and creative combinations, with favourites including the Scamorza and Coppa pizza, or the Smoked Aubergine and Burrata for soft cheese fanatics.

Having operated since the early 90s, you can expect delicious, tried-and-tested recipes at Eco, served by a dedicated team.

Purezza

Purezza is London’s largest vegan restaurant, serving smash hit plant-based pizzas for all to enjoy. The Clapham site is just one of Purezza’s many locations up and down the country, with their fresh, light sourdough pizzas also available to taste in Brighton, Hove, Bristol and Manchester.

Purezza present a whole load of creativity when it comes to their neapolitan-style pizzas, using fun toppings like smoked tofu and beetroot carpaccio in the place of conventional non-vegan ingredients. They also incorporate a pretty convincing cheese substitute!

The modern, relaxed pizzeria is all about purity, if not made obvious by their name. So, whether or not you’re a vegan, Purezza is the destination for a tasty, but non-stodgy dinner.

Dusty Knuckle

Having started its journey as a cafe and bakery based in a 40ft shipping container, Dusty Knuckle is full of surprises… and incredible sourdough. The cafe has always been a hugely popular East London destination for breakfast sandwiches – but in lockdown, they became a smash hit for their pizza nights.

With sites based in Dalston and Harringay, Dusty Knuckle hosts their iconic pizza nights on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30pm, serving up delicious sourdough pizzas, which customers enjoy in the cafe’s outdoor courtyard. This is especially perfect for anyone craving an al fresco style Summer evening.

Dusty Knuckle’s offerings are simple, but most definitely effective. Their incredible take on the Margherita is one not to be missed, with expertly-made freshly cooked sourdough taken straight from the site’s bakery.

Four Hundred Rabbits

Four Hundred Rabbits is an absolute master in the pizza and craft beer game. With restaurants scattered across South London, this playful pizzeria is a solid option for all your sourdough pizza and beer cravings.

The restaurant’s menu offers a wide range of topping options to be paired with their organic sourdough bases. Some favourites include inventive options like The Rhubarb, topped with (you guessed it) rhubarb, along with chipotle rolled goats cheese, piquillo pepper and fresh basil, and The Chorizo, which incorporates semi-cured brindisa iberico chorizo, pickled red chillis and fresh basil.

There are also a number of fun vegan options on the menu, offering a little more than the standard vegetable-topped pizza created solely to tick a box. The Clean Vegan offers an exciting take on a lighter, veggie option, while The Dirty Vegan combines vegan meats and cheeses with jalapenos and sriracha.

If you want something a little more experimental than your bog-standard pizza and craft beer restaurant, Four Hundred Rabbits is the place to be.
